For this month, our Make/Model Spotlight will be highlighting the Toyota Tundra. In terms of existence in the vehicle realm, this pickup is a relative newcomer. However it has been a force to be reckoned with when competing with other pickups. So let’s dive in and take a look at the Toyota Tundra pickup.

The Toyota Tundra

When we say the Toyota Tundra is a newcomer, we mean was only introduced the North American auto market in 2000. In fact it was the first full-size pickup in North America to be manufactured by a Japanese manufacturer. It is currently being produced in Texas, the only factory in the state to manufacture a full-size pickup truck.

The first generation of Toyota Tundra’s were manufactured from 2000 to 2006. A lawsuit from Ford actually forced the name change to Tundra, which was originally T150, a very close naming to Ford’s F-150. The initial rollout of the truck led record-breaking initial vehicle sales for Toyota along with Motor Trend’s “Truck of the Year” award. Unfortunately the first generation has been through its fair share of woes, having recalls in 2009 and 2012 due to issues with the rear crossmember and faulty ball joints.

The second generation of the Toyota Tundra began in 2007 and is the current generation on the market today. Shortly following the new generation product, the Tundra won the Motor Trend’s “Truck of the Year” award again in 2008.
